The RAF have rehearsed a fly-past over Anglesey for the Diamond Jubilee, although the actual event will be over Windsor Castle.

More than 200 people watched aircraft, including Hawk, Tornado and Hercules, take to the skies at Mona Airfield.

Pilots on Tuesday had to pretend it was the Queen’s residence in Berkshire.

On Saturday, 80 aircraft will take place in the real fly-past, which is part of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s 60-year reign.

RAF Flt Lt Rob Pitt told BBC Wales the pilots taking part were highly skilled, and the level of complexity was very, very high.

It bears testament to the excellent training for combat operations our men and women receive here on Anglesey”

Group Captain Adrian Hill ADCRAF Valley station commander told the BBC: “The Royal Air Force train the absolute best combat fast jet pilots in the world and all of those combat fast jet pilots come through Royal Air Force Valley to do that training,” he added.

“So they’ve been training for this with the commanding officer for quite some time. I think today is going to bear the fruit of those efforts.”

The fly-past will include 60 RAF Tucanos, which are fast jet trainer aircraft from RAF Linton-on-Ouse near York.

RAF squadron leader Albie Fox said: “This is one of the more complex fly-pasts there have been because there are so many aircraft taking part,” he added.

“The level of skill required is unprecedented but highlights the operational capability of the RAF.”

“It is quite complex and it takes a lot of choreography to make sure it happens correctly.”

Group Captain Adrian Hill ADC, station commander RAF Valley, said the Diamond Jubilee flypast was a “tremendous privilege”.

“As the station commander and senior pilot at RAF Valley, I can attest to the extreme complexity and skill required to execute it to the precision timing and positioning required,” he said.

“It bears testament to the excellent training for combat operations our men and women receive here on Anglesey.

“Everyone in the Armed Forces is hugely proud of Her Majesty and the Royal Family, who stand shoulder to shoulder with us on operations, as they have throughout our histories.

“I am honoured to lead Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Flypast and can state with absolute certainty that every pilot, engineer and member of the RAF Valley operations and support staff are extremely proud of the part they have played in making the flypast a success.”

The Duke of Cambridge is based at RAF Valley, where he is a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

A couple from County Down and County Kildare have climbed to the top of Ireland’s holiest mountain, Croagh Patrick, to marry.

And there at 2,507ft (764.1m) they became only the seventh couple to say “I do” in the tiny 107-year-old St Patrick’s Oratory.

Around 50 guests made it to the top as well. They remained in their jackets and fleeces to keep out the biting wind.

But the couple did a quick change – she into the traditional white wedding dress and veil and he into a suit. Both outfits had to be ferried to the top in rucksacks.

Willie Gordon, a firefighter from Annalong, County Down and Susanna Gaynor, a General Practitioner from Newcastle County Kildare, met last year on a canoeing trip to the Hebrides.

Around 50 guests made it to the top of the mountain for the ceremony

The first wedding on top of the mountain took place in 1906. The next wasn’t until 1984 and involved the caretaker John Cummins who opened the church for the new Mr and Mrs Gordon.

They’re only the sixth or seventh couple to get married here. There haven’t been very many, said a Mr Cummins to the BBC who climbs the mountain “three or four times a week” to carry out maintenance on the church.

The wedding should help prepare the couple for their honeymoon to the Himalayas.

The Queen walked from Windsor Castle to the Guildhall with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The event has been billed as a thank you to the Royal family’s neighbours in the Berkshire town.

The Queen and Prince Philip also met people in the town who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries.

The Queen was initially shown around by the Mayor of Windsor, Councillor Asghar Majeed, and met a line-up of children, who handed her bouquets of flowers.

The Queen also met couples celebrating their diamond wedding anniversaries this year.

David Bosford from Datchet told the bbc: “She asked when our anniversary was. I told her that my wife was also called Elizabeth and was her namesake. She was absolutely charming.”

The last time the Queen, 86, had a Windsor walkabout was for her 80th birthday on 21 April in 2006.

The Diamond Jubilee Pageant, featuring music, dance, military and equestrian displays, is due to be held between 10 and 13 May at Windsor Castle.

It will involve 550 horses and more than 1,000 performers from around the world.

A Scottish couple were bowled over when they received a message of congratulations on their golden wedding anniversary from none other than the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Jan and Eddie Black from Cardenden in Fife were celebrating 50 years of married life surrounded by their family and friends this week when they discovered that one of the many presents given to them to mark the occasion was in fact a framed message from President Obama. The gift was wrapped and placed amongst all of the couple’s other presents which made the surprise all the greater when they finally opened it.

The extra special gift came from the couple’s son, Steven, who has been living in Georgia, USA for the last 20 years. Steve’s wife wrote to the governor to arrange the wedding anniversary message from the president. The framed messages are usually reserved for American citizens, however it seems the White House made an exception in the case of Jan and Eddie Black who’ve lived their entire married life in Fife.

The framed message from Obama, which bears the official stamp of The White House, reads, “An enduring marriage like yours is truly golden”. 70-year-old Eddie and 68-year-old Jan said receiving the personal message from the president “topped off” their 50th wedding anniversary celebrations.

A dog named Snoopy has become the best man at the wedding of his owners.

When Sue and Michael Hopkins finally wedded after 14 years together, and they decided that they did not want snoopy to miss out on the ceremony.

The 11-year-old lurcher known kept the rings in a bag round his neck and began barking to let people know the service had finished.

The couple are to take their best man with them on honeymoon next month once they have booked a dog-friendly hotel.

They picked him as their best man after discussing it with vicar Nick Stanyon at Manselton United Reformed Church.

Mrs Hopkins, 49, lived near the vicar and knew him from dog walking in the local park.

Snoopy was a rescue dog from the city’s Llys Nini RSPCA animal centre in 2001.

Hopkins told the BBC: “He’s quite placid now. He is an old boy now but he is still quite anxious if the doorbell goes.

“He has still got that bit of fire in him.”

“We always thought we would have Snoop with us. But we thought we were going to lose him at Christmas.”

Snoopy was treated for a blood clot and thankfully was able to survive, and a week before the wedding he was booked for an optical operation.

He recovered from this in time to wear a purple and lilac scarf on the big day, the same colour as the flowers and groom’s tie.

Mrs Hopkins said: “Because we have come so far and done so much, we wanted him to be part of the day as well.”

For Wayne French and Becky Harrison, East Yorkshire, the win means they are now able to plan the wedding of their dreams.

Becky said the couple had always wanted to get married but were never financially able to.

Wayne told the BBC: “I have always thought I’d like Barbados, to be able to walk on white beaches. It’s possible now.”

Miss Harrison, a stay-at-home mother, said she asked her partner to marry her soon after she realised they had won £2.2m in Wednesday’s lottery draw.

The win came four days after celebrating Becky’s 34th birthday.

Mr French said he intended to retire from his job as a support worker at a local hospital and find a “hobby”, as well as spend more time in the garden with their four children.

He has been reported saying: “Being able to retire at 44 is an amazing feeling – not many people can say that.

“As we’ve never actually had a family holiday abroad before, top of the shopping list is jetting off somewhere nice and hot.”

Chris and Charm Robson, of St Bees feel that the best way to celebrate their 50 year long marriage is by running a marathon.

Both retired teachers have already participated in several marathons, and regularly compete in races in the Lake District.

The happy couple will join thousands of other runners on April 22nd to participate in the London Marathon, and will also be raising money for Alzheimer’s research UK.

Chris, 73, has already run two London marathons, but it will be his wife’s first.

Mrs Robson, 72, took up running when she was about 40 as something to do with one of her children, who was athletic.

She told the BBC: “I thought that running together would be something we could do together without quarrelling. It didn’t work, but I got hooked,” she said.

Mrs Robson suffered a minor stroke seven years ago, but was determined to continue and was fortunate to have a speedy recovery.

The couple have decided to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research due to the fact that Mr Robson’s family have suffered with it, and that the research is horribly underfunded.

The couple in preparation for the event have been running between 30 and 40 miles per week.

Mrs Robson said she was hoping to complete it in about five hours, with her husband expecting to cross the finish line about an hour later, which will leave them enough time to continue celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

It is reported that there will be thousands of people in attendance to watch the Royals travel through Westminster to London.

This will be the first royal carriage ride the young couple have taken since their wedding in April 2011.

A sovereign’s Escort will be accompanying the other members of the royal family, which includes Prince Harry, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The carriage procession is to be part of a four day bank-holiday weekend celebrating the auspicious occasion celebrating the queen’s 60 year reign.

As the procession passes the Horse Guards Parade, the Queen will be honoured with a 60 Gun Salute which will be fired by the King’s Troop royal horse artillery.

Those honouring the queen are wary of what could potentially go wrong, as many were completely surprised by the amount of people who arrived to witness the royal wedding last year.

Before the Queen sets out on the Royal procession, she and the other senior royals are to be joined by 700 guests for a lavish lunch which includes several schools and charities from across the UK.

The rate of marriages has risen in the UK has risen by 3.7% since 2010. The Office of National Statistics has released data that shows that marriages have risen to as high as 241,000 over the past three years.

This increase may initially seem as though more and more people are choosing to get married, as it is the largest rise in marriage statistics for over ten years, as civil ceremonies accounted for 68% of weddings, as opposed to 64% at the turn of the century.

Upon looking further into the statistics, the highest number of marriages between men and women were couples aged between 25 and 29, whereas the largest growth of those getting married are men aged between 45 to 49, and women aged between 30 and 34.

However, these statistics are only concerning weddings within the UK itself, and does not take into account marriages of UK citizens that have taken place outside of the UK.

This is an interesting issue to consider, as it is possible that the current economic situation has meant that more couples are choosing to stay and get married within the UK, rather than choose to get married in glamorous settings such as Las Vegas or the Caribbean.

An archdeacon has come out to say that the decision to increase the fees required for church weddings and funerals is the victim of “unfortunate” timing, with fears abounding that people will be even more likely to marry in a registrar’s office as a result.

Members of the Church of England Synod have voted to raise the cost of a church wedding from £296 to £415, over four times the £100 fee for a service in a registry office.

Archdeacon of Loughborough the Ven David Newman said “If people want to have a wedding or funeral in church they will try to seek it out.

“It is unfortunate this decision has come at a difficult economic time.”

He does add that the increases were as a result of churches trying to catch up to fees, stating “Most churches are listed buildings with an enormous upkeep.

“Clergy who are present at funerals and weddings give a lot of time both before and afterwards – it is not just for an hour in church.”

The higher fees now include the cost of lighting and the administration work that goes into a service however there are still other aspects, such as heating and organists, that are not included in the fee.

Income from weddings, baptisms and funerals accounts for £35 million granted to the church every year, of which £15 million is used to pay the clergy.

Rev Lee Francis-Dehqani, vicar of Oakham, concluded “We are very keen that no couple will be priced out of a church wedding.”
